T4 is the major hormone produced by the thyroid gland it binds to receptor sites on cells, triggering an increase in metabolism and growth. The thyroid gland produces two hormones: T4 and T3. The primary function of the thyroid gland is to regulate its own activity through a feedback mechanism that involves thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine (T4). It does this by binding to receptors on cells all over the body, causing them to absorb more salt from the urine and release more potassium into the blood. A mineralocorticoid hormone released by the adrenal cortex that maintains the sodium and potassium balance in the body.
